A Ma Maniére x Awake NY

For Angelo Baque, the Founder and Creative Director of Queens, NY-based Awake NY, a brand collaboration has always served as a chance to infuse meaning into the conversations happening within the streetwear and fashion space. With deep roots in the industry, Baque constantly strives to challenge the idea of a run-of-the-mill brand partnership. This notion organically brought about the newest iteration of COLOR CODE: A Ma Maniére x Awake NY.

The capsule collection marks the inaugural partnership between Awake NY and A Ma Maniére, a marriage between New York City and A Ma Maniére’s firm roots in DC, Houston and Atlanta. Comprised of nine total pieces (three hoodies, three sweatpants and three T-shirts), the design of the A Ma Maniére x Awake NY COLOR CODE capsule was inspired by 1990s athletic wear from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

A panther graphic adorning the hoodies and T-shirts serves as a nod to the Black Panther radical political organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton in 1960s Oakland, CA. An homage to the spirit of the Party, the graphic serves as a symbol for change and resistance. The T-shirts also feature the text “Higher Learning,” a call to action for all POC communities to not only inspire change and resistance, but to stand together in solidarity.
